The extended bank holiday weekend around Easter is a great opportunity to get together with family and friends and what better way to keep everyone busy than an epic egg hunt!
The idea of the hunt is to get everyone excited and working together to figure out the clues – giving out clues one at a time can ensure everyone is included and able to work out the hiding place together. Here is a list of what you will need to host the greatest Easter Egg Hunt ever:
Whatever you search for should something that stands out in the search area – mini chocolate eggs, painted easter stones or a printed picture of an easter chick are all good options.
If you are keen to control the chocolate consumption on the hunt then items that can be ‘traded’ for sweet treats at the end are a great idea. This also helps if you have one ‘super collector’ that manages to collect everything first as you can moderate the number of goodies they receive so there is plenty to share for each participant.
Kids love the sense of achievement of collecting into a bucket or basket and seeing it fill up, so have something on hand for each participant – an easter bag, a clean plastic flowerpot or a hat are all great for keeping the treasure safe and you could have a crafting session before the hunt to decorate them.
What is an Easter egg hunt without clues – tailor the clues to your participants, pre-schoolers will be able to identify hiding spots from pictures or simple drawings.
For older children it’s a great opportunity to start using riddles and challenging their thinking – in a place where your feet go, they may be a little bit smelly…oh no! There are plenty of online resources that can help out with indoor or outdoor clue ideas and riddles.
Hiding spots are easy to tailor to your search team, for toddlers and younger children keep the reward clearly visible and at an appropriate height, be ready with words of encouragement and tips for where to look.
For older children and adults hide the rewards inside, underneath, behind, above or below the search location. The crazier the hiding spot the more rewarding it is to find and the more fun the search team will have.
Have a clear ending to the hunt, a bigger ‘reward’ or a big FINAL CLUE so everyone knows it’s time to stop searching!
A little bit of planning can create a fun activity for the whole family, indoors or outdoors.
